Cortland Elementary School Besieged by Rotten-Egg Odor””

The Daily-Chronicle is reporting that residents of Cortland, IL have been complaining for close to a year about a “horrible” and “very distinct” smell permeating the town. Lisa Williams notices it while driving her children to school, and again at night, and all through last summer. She, and other Cortland residents, believe they know the culprit. Since August 1, Waste Management began accepting more than double the amount of trash at its Somonauk Road landfill. The Illinios EPA suggested citizens file a pollution complaint form, and cautioned that the odor could be coming from elsewhere. Williams, whose 9 year old gets pounding headaches and whose 8 year old increased his asthma medication over the summer, said simply “We know the difference.”

We blogged earlier this year that students and staff and Cortland Elementary were sickened when odors became caught in the school’s ventilation system. The IEPA has not yet determined which gas sickened students, but did find that Waste Management, the owner and operator of the landfill, violated state law.

We are currently representing over 200 Illinois residents in an odor nuisance lawsuit in Winnebago County, Illinois, and represented 200 residents in an odor nuisance lawsuit in DeWitt County, Illinois. While I do not currently represent anyone in Cortland, Illinois, I am licensed in Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin, and have a national practice and represent hundreds of hundreds of people similarly situated throughout the United States, who have suffered from odor issues from various sources.
