Medication Errors Related to Birth of a Baby

Doctors and nurses must promptly provide medication (often pain relievers) to the mother. In some cases, medical personnel deliver the incorrect medication or incorrect dosage to a mother who is in the process of delivering a baby. This can harm both the mother and the child.

Birth injuries are sometimes caused by infection. During labor and delivery, babies are exposed to the mother’s bacteria and viruses. Medical personnel need to test for certain kinds of maternal infections during prenatal care and delivery to identify and treat these conditions with antibiotics or antivirals. Failure to properly administer necessary drugs can cause infections in the baby’s brain (encephalitis), spinal cord (meningitis), or lungs (pneumonia).
