- Diabetes and gestational diabetes.
- Prolonged pregnancy.
- High blood pressure and preeclampsia.
- Premature rupture of membranes.
- Multiples (twins, triplets).
- PCOS, kidney disease, autoimmune disorders and thyroid issues.
High-risk pregnancies require careful monitoring and increased testing to ensure that the mother and baby are getting sufficient blood flow, oxygen and nutrients. In some cases, an early delivery might need to be scheduled. Failing to diagnose a pregnancy as high risk and to treat such potential problems during prenatal care can cause injuries to both mother and baby.
Examples of errors relating to high risk pregnancies include:
- The failure of medical personnel to communicate special pregnancy or delivery issues to the doctor and hospital staff involved in the delivery.
- Failing to anticipate birth complications.
- Failing to perform specialized testing for the mother and baby during pregnancy.
- Failing to monitor fetal heart rates to detect irregular fetal heartbeat.
- Failing to refer high-risk mothers to specialized providers for specialized care.
