Errors in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

When babies are born prematurely, their brains, lungs, and other organs have not yet fully matured. This increases the risk that they will require medical treatment to assist with their breathing and other medical issues. The medial technology that helps babies to breath needs to be properly operated to maintain the proper amount of oxygen in the baby’s blood. Failure to maintain blood gas levels can put babies at risk for motor disorders, cognitive impairments, seizures and other injuries relating to vision and hearing.

It is also critically important to carefully feed babies in the NICU especially those with low blood sugar. If a baby’s blood sugar drops too low, the baby can suffer a brain injury.

Jaundice is another condition common to babies in NICU. If undetected and untreated, bilirubin can build up in the baby’s body, crossing the blood-brain barrier and causing brain damage.
