Alabama’s Environmental Protection Division has cited the Swift Creek Landfill, owned and operated by Republic Services, Inc., for multiple violations including not covering the landfill daily, the leachate (smelly liquid that drains from the garbage) not being properly recirculated through the landfill; bad record keeping, and the working face of the landfill being too large. While the owner is denying any problems, in the comments section of the article, one of the residents states that the smell is so bad that they have to run from their car to their house when they get home, in order to avoid the smell. They were told that the smell was from methane.
While I do not currently represent anyone at this site, I do represent hundreds of residents in a very similar situation in Florida. In their case, the odors from the landfill were determined to be hydrogen sulfide, no less a toxic gas as methane.
We found an unrelated article that mentioned that “[I]n 1986, residents opposed the Swift Creek Landfill on Davis Road when it was first permitted as a site for construction debris. Eight years later, it received a permit to open a new section for household garbage.
