According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head that causes the brain to bounce or twist within the skull. In turn, producing chemical changes in the brain that may stretch and damage its cells. While concussions are not typically life-threatening, it does not mean they do not warrant attention. A concussion should always be taken seriously.
One of the reasons why some may not treat concussions seriously is because the after-effects are not always detectable. In 2013, a study published by Neurology linked impaired cognitive function and concussions through a population sample from Olmstead County in Minnesota. Individuals who reported head trauma in the past had more amyloid deposits present in their brains than those who had not experienced a head injury. Amyloid deposits are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
When subjected to repeated concussions, the likelihood of long-term adverse effects is even higher, as is the case for many athletes. Unfortunately, athletes often underreport concussions, not allowing their injury to heal properly. Thus, making them more susceptible to side effects, including, sensory processing impairment, abnormal brain waves, impaired motor skills, and emotional disturbances. Although one cannot reverse the initial damage, there are ways to stabilize a patient suffering from this injury; however, it will require extensive testing and treatment.
